Long pit tour (2H)
On this circular tour through the Messel Pit, you will learn how the Messel Pit, oil shale, and the fossils it contains were formed. You will walk down to the deepest level of the pit and reach the site where a research drilling was carried out in 2001. Today, you can taste groundwater from the depths here. You will also stop at an excavation site (active excavation only takes place during the excavation season).

Approx. 3 km, 60 meters elevation gain, up to 12% gradient.

Minimum flat rate: For private groups, this is €160 (equivalent to 20 participants), with a foreign language surcharge of €20 for English or French. Please note on the form if any participants have difficulty walking – we will find a suitable solution.
