Horses are not the only animals to have changed since the Eocene epoch: the Messel Pit represents a period in which many important groups of mammals formed. Together with other living creatures, their ecosystem has been preserved in the oil shale. Paleontological researchers are reconstructing this past world, which may also teach us something about our climate future.

Our offerings are based on the curriculum of the state of Hesse and can be booked in two formats:
The school programme lasts two hours and is more educational and informative. The program takes place exclusively in the mine.
The workshop lasts a total of three hours and combines a one-hour mine tour with a two-hour practical module for active participation. Only bookable from March to October.
