World Heritage Express (1h)
Immerse yourself in a bygone era and embark on a search for Messel’s fossil treasure in the oil shale. Visit Germany’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in comfort and style with our World Heritage Express. The ride in the almost silent electric vehicle takes you through the former oil shale quarry. Learn about the industrial history of the pit, the formation of the oil shale, and the fossils found in it. Hold small fossils in your hand and feel a touch of eternity from the Eocene epoch.
During the tour, various topics related to the Messel Pit will be addressed and the most important facts and figures explained.
We have cozy blankets available for you in case of cooler temperatures. Access to the electric vehicle is not barrier-free! If you are bringing a certified assistance dog, please let us know when booking. Please also note that it can get very warm in the pit in summer.
Route
Approx. 1.5 km, 40 meters elevation gain, up to 8% gradient. The entire route is covered by electric bus.
